Creation Story is a multi-movement work for woodwind quintet encompassed by the central themes of Natvie American culture, specifically the Seminole Nation. Movement I. Beginnings tells the legend of the world's genesis as told by the Seminole tribe. According to legend (as seen here), the Creator formed the panther and then all other animals, placing them in a shell atop a mountain. The animals were supposed to break out of the shell and would then be free to roam the earth. In the piece, the melody of the flute depicts the panther, reinforcing his role as the most important among the animals. The recurring, short eighth- and sixteenth-note blurps are that of the other animals attempting to break out of the shell. The syncopation of the line shows the struggle to escape confinement. At the end of the movement, all animals break free of the shell at once with the unison syncopated line. Creation Story is a five movement work in total; excerpts of movements I and IV are shown here.
